*During this reporting period, we changed our approach for takedown demands from Azerbaijan and Turkey. We now respond to them as we do the demands from Russia, which is why the percentage of requests where some or all content was removed has increased.

Recent Examples

Here are a few recent examples of takedown demands that we received:

Israel

  •  The Administration of Courts made several requests to remove different sites for posting allegedly defamatory content regarding public officials.

Malaysia

  • The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission requested removal of a site for using the name and a photograph of a person without their consent.

Russia

  • We received 61 orders from the Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications (Roskomnadzor) for content that was deemed to be in violation of Russian Federal Law 139. For example, a site that contained “appeals to mass riots, extremist activities, and participation in mass (public) actions held with infringement of the established order” and another that had content that was “prohibited for public distribution in the Russian Federation.”

Turkey

  • A Criminal Judgeship of Peace approved a Public Prosecutor’s request to ban a site that criticized the President. Article 299 of Turkish Criminal Code states that anyone who insults the president shall be sentenced from 1-4 years.
