Here are a few recent examples of requests for user information that we received from government sources. We did not provide information in response to any of these requests.

India

  • A police department in India requested detailed information about the author of a site critical of the Indian government and electoral process, stating it contained “elements of hate and abuse regarding the Prime Minister of India”. No valid legal process was provided.

Guatemala

  • The National Civil Police of Guatemala requested detailed information about the author of a site containing allegations of abuse, said to be perpetrated by a high-ranking government official. They provided no additional explanation, and no valid legal process. 

Italy 

  • A police department in Italy requested detailed information about the author of a site critical of a town’s Mayor, and the alleged mismanagement of public services, citing the “crime of defamation in the press”. No valid legal process was provided.
