About

At Automattic we believe in making the world a better place. We’re committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and our common goal is to democratize publishing and commerce. That means a fundamental belief in the importance of freedom of expression.

We also stand for:

  • Transparency. A fully informed citizenry is the foundation of a functioning democracy, and we believe that our users should know what happens with their data.
  • Fighting censorship. We are prepared to go to court on behalf of our users, whether that’s in response to instances of government over-reach, or abuse of the DMCA.
  • Impact over profit. Something that is explicitly listed in our creed
  • Investment in Open Source. We believe that open source is one of the most powerful ideas of our generation, and we actively give back 5% of company time to contribute to WordPress core.

Our values are built on a respect and commitment for human rights, including those enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and we are guided by the standards outlined in the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs).

Since 2014 we have been using this Transparency blog to publish data and insights into the kinds of complaints, takedown demands, and information requests that we receive across our products and services. We believe that companies should provide this kind of information without being required to by regulation, and are continually looking for ways that we can expand on what is included. In this report you will find the hard numbers on complaints of alleged intellectual property infringement, a list of sites that we have been pressured to geo-block in different regions around the world, and examples of particularly egregious cases highlighted in our Hall of Shame.
